What to do if you have this food at home

Check the lot codes and best-before dates above against the package in your kitchen. A recall covers only the codes the agency listed, so identical-looking packs from other production runs are unaffected.

  1. Stop eating it, and do not open a sealed pack to "check" whether it looks or smells wrong — pathogens such as Listeria and Salmonella leave no visible trace.
  2. Photograph the label, the lot code and the best-before date before you throw anything away. That photo is the only proof of purchase most grocers will ask for.
  3. Seal the item in a bag and bin it, or return it to the store. If it leaked in your fridge, wash the shelves and drawers with hot soapy water, then sanitise — Listeria survives refrigeration.
  4. If you ate it and feel unwell, call your doctor and mention the recall by name. Symptoms of a foodborne infection can take days or even weeks to appear.

How to get your money back

Food recalls carry a full refund, and in the United States you do not need the receipt or the packaging in most cases.

  • Take the product, or your photo of the label, to the customer service desk of the store where you bought it. Nearly every national grocer refunds recalled food on the spot, without a receipt.
  • If you have a loyalty card, the retailer can usually look the purchase up in your history — Kroger, Costco and Walmart all do this routinely.
  • Bought it online? Open the order in your account and use the refund or return option; marketplace sellers are required to honour a federal recall.
  • If the store refuses, contact the recalling company directly using the contact details on this page. The firm, not the shop, carries the cost of a recall.
